So there is your problem as far as I can tell.

If I read your emails correct, you have X11_TYPE set in /etc/mk.conf but
not in /usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf.

You are using /etc/mk.conf when you should be using /usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf.

Either remove /usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf or /etc/mk.conf (and put your desired
X11_TYPE and other settings in the file you want to keep).

I changed the

/usr/pkgsrc/mk/platform/DragonFly.mk

value back to xorg

and added the line

X11_TYPE=modular

in

/usr/pkg/etc/mk.conf

and get

modular

for

#bmake show-var VARNAME=X11_TYPE
