 If the only reason for v34.1 is that "it is the latest," then I'm  inclined to agree with sticking to v33 for now.
 
 However, I'm not the maintainer of protobuf in pkgsrc, and it only  gets pulled into my builds because of mosh.  A quick cursory test  run of mosh revealed no issues.
