There's something screwy on my build systems. On the one local to me
at the moment, macppc-current fontconfig.pc says 2.6.0, while on a remote
one, it says 2.10.93--good enough to satisfy pango (but slightly older
 than in netbsd-6?).

Checking "UPDATING" again, I see no mention of fontconfig shenanigans.

When I rebuilt (update build) i386 on the local system just(! 12+hours)
now, it seemed to rebuild EVERYTHING, regardless. Starting macppc-current
build on the local machine again... (and downloading a snapshot build
 in the meantime).

Likely. "I don't have usable fontconfig, so don't look for cairo-fc."
Looking at the ./configure script, it has a test for freetype, but seems
to skip it entirely (check after fontconfig, before cairo).
