I finally understand what is going on. The build is not incomplete,
"ncurses" uses a different directory structure under Mac OS X:

 NetBSD:
 tron@colwyn:~>ls -l /usr/pkg/share/terminfo/z/ztx-1-a
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 535 Sep 21 2009 /usr/pkg/share/terminfo/z/ztx-1-a

 Darwin:
 tron@excalibur:~>ls -l
/tmp/objdir/devel/ncurses/work.excalibur/.destdir/usr/pkg/share/terminfo/7a/ztx-1-a
 -rw-r--r-- 5 tron shadows 535 21 Jun 09:36
/tmp/objdir/devel/ncurses/work.excalibur/.destdir/usr/pkg/share/terminfo/7a/ztx-1-a

"7a" happens to be the the ASCII value of "z" in hex. I don't know
whether this is intentional or an incompatibility between "ncurses"'s
installation routines and Mac OS X.

        Kind regards
