 Sorry, seems we are not done yet. When testing my own suggestion in

 i.e. setting
 
 PREFER_PKGSRC=yes
 
 and then installing graphics/freetype2 (to check the use of zlib), build 
 enters an infinite loop, oscillating between net/tnftp and 
 devel/ncurses. Setting
 
 PREFER_NATIVE=ncurses
 
 (which I don't actually want to use, anyway) does not solve this behavior.
