        xdm allows running a setup script that prepares the X server for xdm 
login.
However, this script is run after the greeter is started, and if the resolution 
changes as a result of running this script the greeter may be placed offscreen.

For example if I put a command for rotating the screen into this script the 
greeter is no longer centered on the screen.
