For me it seems to be the CPU usage that causes the hang,
not memory. I tried to run 'free' while compiling a generic
kernel and at some point I had around half of the 1024 MB
physical memory in use, 0 bytes of swap, and when I
clicked a HTML link, the whole machine hanged there.
CPU meter showed 95-100% usage at that point. If I don't
run anything CPU intensive on the background, I can run
firefox-bin until the end of days...
I have a P4 HT, but I don't run an SMP kernel.

Nope. Around 20-30 megs only.
I also updated the latest suse packages and updated everything,
but the problem didn't go away.
BR,
Teemu
