 I have had similar problems several times too (with NetBSD/i386 1.5.x, 
 1.6.x and 2.0.x). It has happened to me when I run out of swap. Sometimes
 I can ssh remotely in and kill X and recover. But sometimes, I can't even 
 ping the box.
 
 (This has happened to me several times when I have firefox running and 
 using up a lot of memory and also while compiling qt3-libs.)
 
 Can you reproduce this and check your swap and memory usage?
 pkgsrc/sysutils/free is useful and also "swapctl -sk".
 
 Also is your firefox itself using up too much memory too?
