If you want to keep hardware acceleration on for other sites (like YouTube), you can try forcing Google Maps into "Lite" mode, which avoids the heavy 3D calls that usually trigger these hangs.

Use the following link to open Maps:

https://www.google.com/maps?force=lite

Alternatively, look for the "Lightning bolt" icon in the bottom right of Maps and switch to 2D mode.

Hello Aryabhata,

Thanks so much for help. That is  the workaround I use in Firefox, but
it would also kill video acceleration in Chromium, the only browser that
works with acceleration in my amd64 system.

Something does not work well in i915 driver. I do not know if I should
fill a PR.
