I can't account for this. If the device is, or gets, reset, then some HW
comes back up with the volume at max.; but, this should be visible in the
kernel logs, should've affected all the other volumes too, not just `master'
alone.

I can maybe explain this one: `master' is the headphone output. `master2' is
the speaker. You should be able to tell which is which if you `boot -vx' in
the bootloader.
