timers slow (sleep 1 taking five seconds)

I think I saw this some months ago, but then problem disappeared.

But today:

$ time sleep 2
   10.01s real     0.00s user     0.00s system

The system is continually used without any other noticable issues.

Any ideas on how to tune this? Possible to fix without
reboot? Troubleshoot?

Thanks
