At least for crispy-doom, and I think most source ports follow this
convention, the man page lists:

  $DOOMWADDIR
  $DOOMWADPATH
  $HOME/.local/share/games/doom/
  /usr/local/share/doom
  /usr/local/share/games/doom
  /usr/share/doom

(I haven't checked for pkgsrc specifics.)
