Not what you asked, but there are USB to IDE adaptors, and these you can
plug in to the computer after you have booted.  That's what I use for
dealing with old IDE disks.

See fstab(5) and the examples section.  (I am unclear on how to derive
the wedge names for fdisk/disklabel disks.)
