NetBSD-8.0_BETA build and LVM

I'm currently building a NetBSD-8.0_BETA build (for amd64).  The build on 7.1.1 went flawlessly. 

However, while trying to use LVM in the shell of the install image, pvcreate and vgcreate work fine. However, upon the first lvcreate, o get:

Failure to communicate with kernel device-mapper driver.

I did ensure that GENERIC contained the dm pseudo device.  I have verified this with nm against the kernels built by build.sh

I see no device to make with MAKEDEV.

What am I missing?

Oddly, this worked flawlessly in 7.1.1 out of the box...
