In my use, the capitalization doesn't matter. For example:

$ ls  ~/.fonts
Glass_TTY_VT220.ttf  ZIGZRG__.TTF

$ fc-list | egrep -i 'glass|vt220|zig'
Glass TTY VT220:style=Medium
Zigzag:style=Regular
