That confirms that the problem is in the keycode-to-symbol translation,
and not the hardware or driver.

What does "wsconsctl -a" show
- With the old keyboard that works with the bépo map?
- With the TypeMatrix and a us keymap?
- With the TypeMatrix and the bépo keymap?

The keymap is supposed to specify a simple translation; if the output is
garbled in one case but not another, the input (the keycodes) must be
different in the two cases.
