OK.  Below is the broken dmesg.  Had to capture via the serial console
consdev=com0
since machine never booted far enough the save the dmesg in a normal way.

Note that I had to install by booting the install cd with NO ACPI support.
 Then the installed
system would boot up (but only when using NO ACPI support there too).  Have
that dmesg
listing below too.

[this took forever since I was originally installing on a machine without
these problems
and moving the disk to the dell 1850 machine.  somehow the com0 bootblocks
(needed
to capture the dmesg) didn't work using this method].  Got the first few
lines, then nothing.

The 3rd dmesg below is output from a freebsd boot on the same machine.

It is odd that the adaptec scsi board comes up as ahc1 on netbsd, and ahc0,
in freebsd.
