I spoke (wrote?) too soon.  It seems to have hung on reboot after panic
again.  This was built from sources after 201109282311Z but before
201109290918Z.

I re-fsck'd the disk to try to deal with the mangled directory entry,
cleaned up the fallout and since the package database was mangled, I
resigned myself to blowing away all the extra software manually.  The
mangled directory consistently showed up in "/usr/pkg/share/qcad/..."

When doing a 'rm -rf' of everything in "/usr/pkg" (except "/usr/pkg/etc"),
'rm' aborted with:

  39 [root@skuld:/usr/pkg]# rm -rf !(etc)
  rm: fts_read: Cannot allocate memory
  40 [root@skuld:/usr/pkg]#

leaving "/usr/pkg/{share,var}" not removed.  The system was still
operational at this point.  I went back and repeated the above
command and lost contact with the machine (I'm remote and [was] SSH'd
into it).

Other than the usual overhead of a system running an X server using the
VESA driver simply sitting with the xdm login displayed, my operations
on "/usr/pkg/*" were the only things running on the machine (2GB RAM,
+1x swap).

That I cannot reconnect with it after some 15 minutes suggests that it
has hung up again, but I won't know for sure until I'm at the console
which will be later this evening.
