Problems with new motherboard and 2TB drive

Hello all. I'm not sure if this belongs on the i386 list or not, but
I'll start here.

I'm using 5.1_RC4/i386

A motherboard in my server recently died, so I ran down to the local
store and bought pretty much the first thing that I found which was an
ASUS M4A78LT-M LE, and I bought a Sempron CPU to go with it. And 1 gig
of memory. Seems plenty for what it does.

I have the dmesg pasted to the bottom if anyone is wondering about it.

I also had a new 2TB SATA drive I want to be /home, and I want to copy
all of the data off of my old /home drive to the new SATA drive.

Getting the new motherboard and related hardware up and running was
fairly uneventful. The old root disk just booted once I got a GENERIC
kernel on it. The other old disks work fine, including the old /home.

I formatted the new SATA drive for /home like this:

newfs -O 2 /dev/rwd0a

It has 1 fdisk partition which takes up the whole disk, and 1 netbsd
partition (a) which takes up the whole disk.

The first attempts to rsync the data from the old IDE ATA-100 disk to
the new SATA disk ended in real problems. I was getting panics related
to ohci, and filesystem errors. I disabled all of the USB stuff in the
BIOS, along with the built in audio adapter. I continued to get errors
related to "soft errors" which were "corrected" (I might be able to
post them if they are needed). I was checking copied files with md5,
and the copied files' md5 sums did not match. They were corrupted.
This is obviously not good.

So in the BIOS I found an option to switch from SATA in IDE mode to
SATA in AHCI mode.

I newfs'd the disk again, then started rsync and now I get no errors,
and md5 sums on random files are consistent. What did I do? Why does
this work better?

Thanks,

Andy
