But at the same price point as a 4 or 5 drive one (you could put the control logic on the same board as the SATA connectors, so the whole unit would only need to be 10" deep or so.

Having worked for several years in the early Double-Noughts with an XScale + GigE + SCSI/SATA/FIBERCHANNEL... I can safely say that the killer is the 'low power/low performance' of the ARM/XSCALE/MINIMAL CPU implementations.
