 How does this help that the 'real' audio device is in his case audio4
 which attaches to a different hdaudio instance?

 I use the following entries in $HOME/.mplayer/config
  ao = sun:/dev/audio1
  mixer = /dev/audio

 In his cause he would have to use:
  ao = sun:/dev/audio4
  mixer = /dev/audio

 I use the svn version and not the pkgsrc version of mplayer with this
configuration.

 IMHO it would be much nicer if the 'real' hdaudio device attaches first
 and not the 'non' functional one.
