Oh -- I may be right off base -- are you using hd audio?
kamloops$ dmesg | grep -i audio
hdaudio0 at pci0 dev 27 function 0: HD Audio Controller

I'm using -current, as well (5.99.39, atm) -- If you're using a 5-release
version, I don't know if my issues would be the same as yours.
