The Linux driver uploads a new firmware to an 8169G. And if that doesn't
happen the chip doesn't seem to work. NetBSD 6.1_STABLE, Debian 7.0
and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS all can bring the card up but not receive packets.
Ubuntu 13.04 (and 13.10) work after the firmware (which is part of
the Linux kernel tree) has been uploaded.

Your BIOS might upload the firmware in case of a netboot but not in
case of a normal boot.

        Kind regards
