savecore vs /var/run/rc.log

Is it really necessary for savecore to do its progress/countdown thing?

I just got a crash on a machine with 6GB of RAM, and the resulting 
/var/run/rc.log file has one humungous line of

         6143 M^M 6142 M^M 6141 M^M 6140 M^M 6139 M^M 6138 M^M...

that just goes on forever!  It took vi a couple of minutes to just open 
the log file!
