It doesn't get you accelerated X.

The argument in the original post to the LWN thread is that modern
applications will all use Xrender which will be just done using the CPU
on an old card.

Being able to run a few xterms with bitmap fonts a bit faster on old
hardware still seems worthwhile to me.
