In recent months I've had Linux inflicted on me at work. One of the
more annoying things about it is that I keep seeing behaviour like

linuxbox:/home/mouse# ls
extinfo.c hacks README serialconsole.c tar

Fortunately, it's easy enough to fix ("export LANG=C"). But if sorting
this way (it also appears to ignore punctuation as well as case) by
default is considered tolerable for a major Unix variant, then no, I
don't think very many people depend on the traditional ls sort order.

At least not for anything moderately portable.
