cpu1: failed to start (amd64)
Hi,
I have a machine that has been happily running NetBSD/i386 for years,
but my recent attempts to install NetBSD/amd64 have failed.
I have attached a dmesg of the machine in question whilst booting to
NetBSD/i386.
Whilst booting into the NetBSD/amd64 install kernel it stops after the
following:
cpu1: failed to start
cpu2: failed to start
cpu3: failed to start
Looking by eye, this is just before the corresponding line in the
attached dmesg:
timecounter: Timecounter "clockinterrupt" frequency 100Hz quality 0
I have tried booting with downloaded installers for 7.1.2 and 8.0_RC1
with the same
result.
Choosing the Install NetBSD (no ACPI, no SMP) option boots successfully
but with
only a single CPU as expected.
Choosing the Install NetBSD (no ACPI) stops very early with a page
fault. See
attached page-fault.txt, I hope I have written it down from the screen
correctly.
I have built a NetBSD/amd64 7.1 GENERIC kernel with the following
additions:
options DIAGNOSTIC
options DEBUG
options LOCKDEBUG
options DDB_ONPANIC=1
but I do not see any more detail in the dmesg displayed.
I have a second machine that is very similar with the same model
motherboard and
CPU but with earlier build/stepping numbers. I have confirmed similar
behaviour on
that machine also.
Any suggestions on what I can try next?
