I didn't have any issue getting it working either.  I had tremendous
problems getting it to come back up in the face of arbitrary reboots of
the two ends of the line.

I don't know why; after half an afternoon of trying I decided it would
be quicker and easier to add v6 support to slip(4), and so it proved.
(v6 was why I was trying PPP instead of SLIP in the first place.)
