Leaving aside the naming debate, and the debate about what kinds of sensors and status info qualifies as "environmental", from a purely mechanical view how would the implementation of a framework to report non-environmental sensors and status differ from what we have now as envsys? Do you see a technical issue with fitness-for-purpose, or a problem with fit-to-intentions (regardless of how the latter might be resolved)? Either way, where disks are reporting temperatures and other status, and especially where ses(4) and similar facilities exist, having clear connectivity between physical attributes (inlcuding fault LEDs) and software constructs like RAID status is incredibly helpful. Whatever the underlying mechanisms, clear linkage for users and admins helps avoid all sorts of errors, like pulling the wrong disk when trying to repair a raid fault. -- Dan.
