That did the trick - I wonder what documentation I missed where "pc" was 
described as an option for "console=" ... ?

Ah, it's in boot(8) and boot_console(8), the latter of which is not linked into 
the amd64 subdirectory of /usr/share/man/man8, which is a bug.
