my understanding (and experience) is that file: is slower than phy: .  I
use phy to export individual partitions, and have my domUs mount the
whole-disk (d) partition per xbd.  I just have to keep in mind not to
fiddle with the partition table on the machine that has rw access to the
beginning of physical disk.
