I have a sparc classic mostly as a toy, and it's running 1.6.
Obviously
it needs new bits, but it only has 64 MB of ram. I am inclined to
binary update it to netbsd-4 via a build on i386 Is that a reasonable
thing to do? Any advice to go to netbsd-3 instead?
Even -current works just fine with 64MB. I'm very sure it would work
with a lot less too - memory really isn't your problem with that
classic. If I were you I'd go look for a cg6 to get reasonably fast
console and X - the classic's onboard graphics is a cg3 which is just
a dumb framebuffer with no acceleration whatsoever. It won't run any
fancy gtk2 or KDE stuff un a usable way but it's more than enough for
a halfway decent window manager and a bunch of xterms.
have fun
