way forward for old sparc?

I have a sparc classic mostly as a toy, and it's running 1.6.  Obviously
it needs new bits, but it only has 64 MB of ram.  I am inclined to
binary update it to netbsd-4 via a build on i386 Is that a reasonable
thing to do?  Any advice to go to netbsd-3 instead?
