As I said, I don't know too much about either the '040 or the '060.

However assuming you are right here, these differences are (with the exception
of the FPU) mostly invisible to the user.

That's most certainly not correct.  Otherwise NetBSD/amiga wouldn't have
got support for the 68060 that easily, would it?
