There are two, so "the usual one" doesn't really answer my question.

That looks like the non-dri one, what do you see if you do:

% ls -l /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/*radeon*

For -current on amd64 I get:

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel       16 Jan  1 22:34 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so -> radeon_drv.so.18
-r--r--r--  1 root  wheel   560440 Jan  1 22:31 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so.18
-r--r--r--  1 root  wheel   539936 Feb 13  2018 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so.7
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel       19 Jan  1 22:34 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv_old.so -> radeon_drv_old.so.6
-r--r--r--  1 root  wheel  1176560 Jan  1 22:31 /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv_old.so.6

To use the older driver I would have to do something like:

# cd /usr/X11R7/lib/modules/drivers
# mv radeon_drv.so.18 radeon_drv_new.so.18
# mv radeon_drv_old.so.6 radeon_drv.so.6
# rm radeon_drv.so
# ln -s radeon_drv.so.6 radeon_drv.so

If you didn't do this when you installed -8 then you could be picking up
a different version.
