9.1 unusable on cobalt qube 2

Hi,

I have just installed netbsd 9.1 on my cobalt Qube 2 but this release
seems very unstable on this machine.

If i try to untar pkgsrc.tar.gz while in an ssh session it will churn
away for some time but then the ssh session stops responding. The disk
will be active for several hours before the machine finally drops off
the network and serial. When looking at the output of the tar command
I can see it only got as far as was displayed in the ssh terminal yet
the disk carried on being accessed for several more hours.

Checking out from anoncvs has the same issue. I tried a pkgsrc hosted
via nfs and compiling cwrappers kills the machine very quickly (it
does not complete the libnbcompat configure step).

There is no core dump and the only messages on serial are of the form

[ 2173.9899586] pmap_tlb_update_addr(0x80ea7da8,0x7dcfe000,0x2af9e, 0)
returned 0
                pmap_tlb_update_addr(0x80ea7ee8,0x7d27c000,0x2e41e, 0)
returned 0

The machine has 16Mb of physical ram, in the correct slot, and 3GB of swap.

Could this be a bad disk or have others experienced something similar?

Thanks

Mark
