Ok, apparently my 690 is still alive.  The larger 2GB CF in it
apparetly didn't survive, but I still had 256MB CF with NetBSD 4 on it :)

I can reproduce the problem with current.  Serial console works (and I
used that to upgrade), but booting with wscons console hangs as you
describe.
