I just did

pkg_delete -f poppler poppler-cpp poppler-utils
pkg_add  poppler-25.08.0nb10.tgz       poppler-cpp-25.08.0nb8.tgz    poppler-utils-25.08.0nb8.tgz

and now evince works, so poppler is definitely the culprit.

(Probably didn't need -cpp and -utils, but that way the userland is  consistent)
