You should see an icon next to the URL field. And your browsing
experience should be vastly different :)
In principal, the add-on does work, I just found this cumbersome way:
- start "Tools -> Web Developer -> Remote Debugging"
- select "This Firefox"
- use "Load Temporary Add-on" and select the xpi file
Now uBlock loads and works as expected. It shows up on the add-on
page. But of course this is only temporary, it will be removed with
the next restart of firefox.
