I installed the 'pulse' plugin version you mention, and now show:

 # pkg_info |grep gst
 gstreamer1-1.14.4 Open source multimedia framework
gst-plugins1-base-1.14.4 Open source multimedia framework - Base plugins
 gstreamer0.10-0.10.36nb10 Open source multimedia framework
gst-plugins0.10-base-0.10.36nb11 Open source multimedia framework - Base plugins
gst-plugins0.10-good-0.10.31nb4 Open source multimedia framework - Good plugins
gst-plugins0.10-oss-0.10.31nb2 Open source multimedia framework - oss plugin
gst-plugins1-good-1.14.4 Open source multimedia framework - Good plugins
gst-plugins1-pulse-1.14.4 Open source multimedia framework - pulse plugin

I have a bit of confidence that pulseaudio is "working," in that
if I launch 'pavucontrol' from the command prompt, the GUI
window opens and I can tweak audio gain.

But epiphany doesn't yet seem to know about my new plugin and I
am again quite clueless as to how to proceed.

Thank you
