"best" way to auto-enter root's password to install packages

Is there a way to enter root's password on the 'make' command line, or perhaps
enter root's password in a file (like .netrc for ftp)? It makes the
process of building
a package by a non-root user too slow and tedious to hand-enter at each prompt.

If 'sudo make' is the only way, isn't that essentially the same as
building as root
in the first place?
