Following up my own post...

The problem is related to text. If I delete the text lines from the
offending files, everything works. If I create a file with xfig, it
works until I try to enter some text. Any idea where I should be
looking? Backtrace shows this:

#3 <signal handler called>
#4 0x00007f7ffbeb7650 in strcpy () from /usr/lib/libc.so.12
#5 0x0000000000481790 in lookfont ()
#6 0x0000000000435332 in read_textobject ()
#7 0x0000000000435d0b in read_compoundobject ()
#8 0x00000000004360e7 in read_objects ()
#9 0x00000000004366e9 in readfp_fig ()
#10 0x00000000004369ca in read_fig ()
#11 0x0000000000436a63 in read_figc ()
#12 0x000000000043156f in load_file ()
#13 0x0000000000441455 in main ()

I suspect it's environment, since others report no such problems. (I
can rebuild wtih -g, I suppose.)
