Can you try this:

dtrace -c 'while :; do glxgears -fullscreen; sleep 1; done' -n '
	fbt::kmem_intr_alloc:entry { @alloc["alloc", arg0, stack()] = count() }
	fbt::kmem_intr_free:entry { @free["free", arg1, stack()] = count() }
'

and hit ESC a few times and then ^C quickly in the terminal where
dtrace is running, and share the output?

Also, just to confirm:

1. You are counting the `Wired' column in top(1), right?
2. Does the wired memory remain elevated after glxgears exits?
3. Does the wired memory remain elevated after X exits?
