NetBSD 11 experience with igc – Intel I225/I226 1Gb/2.5Gb Ethernet?
Greetings netbsd-users and especially the three people who ported igc
from OpenBSD:
I asked this question probably two years ago, and one person said they
had such a chipset in their desktop with no issues.
Newer Protectli boxes have I226 chipssets, e.g.

NetBSD supports I225/I226 with igc(4) which has the following (man page)
caveats:
The igc driver in NetBSD 10.0 is considered experimental. Some error
handling paths are not fully implemented. It does not support hardware
VLAN tagging at the moment.
FreeBSD has a driver that doesn't appear to have such caveats, and
OPNsense is FreeBSD and thus I suspect this is 100% fine.

The OpenBSD man page doesn't mention vlan, but I can't really conclude
anything from reading it:
https://man.openbsd.org/igc.4
Reading the diffs from netbsd-10 to netbsd-11, and netbsd-11 to current,
I see only "keeping up" type changes.
I would like to hear from anyone using this driver, especially on
netbsd-11, or use on current before the branch, specifically:
Is it working solidly, staying up forever like you'd expect, and thus
suitable for a router?
Is the "hardware vlan support" indeed still missing?
Assuming "hardware vlan support missing", have you used vlans, and has
that been ok? I'm mostly concerned about main net not tagged, and
separate IOT jail and guest nets tagged, performance not so important
as long as it's reliable.
Does anyone have private patches for vlan support?
Anything else I or someone contemplating a box with this chipset
should know?
Thanks,
Greg
