Re: Looking for a successor to my X230 for NetBSD

Hello all,

I'm considering buying a "new" used ThinkPad X-series laptop to run NetBSD and would appreciate hearing about real-world experiences from others.

My current daily driver is a ThinkPad X230, which has served me very well for many years. However, it's starting to show its age, and I'd like something with better battery life, a higher-quality display, and more modern hardware while still keeping the compact form factor that I like about the X-series.

At the moment I have a ThinkPad X13 Gen 2 Yoga here that I'm setting up for someone else with Ubuntu. Unfortunately, neither the Wi-Fi nor the graphics seem to work properly under NetBSD, which makes me a bit hesitant about newer models.

I'm therefore looking at some slightly older machines, such as:

ThinkPad X280
ThinkPad X390
ThinkPad X13 Gen 1

Does anyone have experience running NetBSD on any of these models? How well do things like graphics, Wi-Fi, suspend/resume, audio, battery management, and external displays work?

I'd be grateful for any recommendations, success stories, or warnings before I start hunting for a machine.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Matthias

Hello Matthias,

I'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad L380. Not the same you wanted, but maybe it's woth it to consider. Working fine out of the box, including WiFi on 5Ghz, audio, display, HDMI port. Just works with NetBSD 10. Highly recommended.

Suspend/resume: I'm not sure, I don't use it.

Regards,
FeZ
