Well, this is not in general that way - I just mounted a USB stick with
-current a few hours ago (and it just did work).
USB mass devices come in lots of different ways (with different protocols),
and also sometimes host controllers/their drivers go crazy. So while your
observations are true for your combination of hardware, you can not generalize
from that.
And it is often difficult to debug if you can not test the concrete failure
locally.
However, if you file a PR and answer request to run various level of
usb debug logs, we might be able to help you get things resolved
remotely.
