I remember using libmtp based programs that gave me a lot of trouble,
especially on netbsd. The most reliable implementation I've used
(on linux) is

Never tried to port it to netbsd, it's supposed to run on macos though.

Nowdays I use scp from termux, or I run a ftp server on android.
I'm not a phone guy and I ignore it all the time, so maybe
you need a more sophisticated solution for your needs.
