That's a bit stale, the 'default' symlinks are a new thing.
audioctl is trying /dev/audioctl and falling back to /dev/audioctl0
if the symlink isn't there.
Similarly mixerctl is trying /dev/mixer and is falling back to
/dev/mixer0 when the symlink isn't there.
