at that time i did not used any packet filter / disabled it to eliminate it 
as a potential source of the issue.
 
Networking was Xen DomU (Linux Dom0) virtual xennet interface configured with 
IPv4 (static).

(pls be aware that i "solved" the problem by updating to 10.x. - since the 
update i got no further such hang).
