Can you try the dial-out device?
{ sleep 1; stty -f /dev/dtyU0 9600 raw clocal cread -crtscts; } & cat /dev/dtyU0
kre@'s should also work with this, I think.
After reading tty(4), I see that there's a difference between ttyU0 and dtyU0,
(as a Linux guy, all this is a bit obscure...), and maybe we should've been
using the dial-out device all along.
